7 ways to prevent illness this cold and flu season

...PLUS 2 ways to TREAT it

It's that time of year where it seems everyone around you is coughing, sneezing, and calling out of work.. you're just waiting for your number to be called. Instead of waiting to get sick, PREVENT it with theses hints from our acupuncturists. After prevention methods, we will also  discuss two ways that we can help get rid of your symptoms FAST and get you back to your life.

1 : Wash Your Hands
I know, we all KNOW we are supposed to wash our hands often, but does it really do much? The answer is astoundingly YES! Germs that cause the cold and flu live all around us, and thanks to our skin, have a hard time getting inside! The problem is when we have these germs on our hands and then touch our face. The skin on our face is much thinner, and we have open orifices that germs can creep into and cause illness. So wash your hands before/after you eat a meal, after every time you use the restroom, and any time before touching your face. I recommend using soap and water over hand sanitizer as hand sanitizer can kill the germs, but doesn’t wash them away like traditional soap and water does.

2: Don’t touch your face
Just as mentioned above, your face is very vulnerable to letting infections enter your body, so try to not touch your face, and if you have to, try to wash your hands first!

3: Don’t catch your cough or sneeze with your hand
Help prevent illness to others by catching your coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or if one isn’t available, the inside of your elbow or sleeve.

4: Bundle Up!
Protect your neck especially! In Chinese Medicine we recognize the back of one’s neck at the “wind gate”. It is the area of the body that is most susceptible to “pathogenic energy”. While it might sound a little on the “wu wu” side, there have been conductive studies done that show there is much less resistance on the nape of the neck than other places on the body. When wind or cold enter the body through the back of the neck, it can weaken the immune system and make us much more susceptible to catching a cold or flu.

5: Eat your green!
This is all about phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are an excellent help to the immune system. They are plentiful in colorful foods like fruits and vegetables. These foods will also be high in other vitamins and minerals (Like Vitamin C) that can help the immune system to fend off illness.

6: Relax
Stress can be very taxing on the immune system and make us much more open to getting ill. So make sure you’re setting some time aside for you. When you’re really busy, and have a difficult time relaxing, try taking a few deep breaths at least once per hour. Taking deep breaths helps to calm the nervous system as it massages the vagus nerve causing. Think about like how a dog gets very relaxed when you rub its belly, same concept! So take a deep breath, and relax!

7: Resolve other ailments
If you have pain, or other medical problems, then your body’s immune system is already busy, so you’ll want to get treatment to help resolve these problems so that your immune system can focus on this season’s germs! Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help to ease pain and reduce inflammation while restoring circulation to your body’s organs and tissues making it stronger and more able to fight off viruses and bacteria.
